Spirituality and Trauma

There is a lot of confusion in the world and people are looking for answers in all the wrong places. It is especially evident in the lives that have been affected by trauma. People don’t know who they are, what they believe, and why they believe. We tend to forget or we just don’t know where to find answers. We are constantly relying on something that is not stable. We don’t know who to trust or where to go for real support.

Is the news, social media, workplace, or even your circle of influence impacting you? Can this be affecting your spirituality? Does trauma have an impact on your spirituality?

Spirituality is a huge part of who you are and if you don’t understand it, it will be difficult to know how to deal with your trauma. There are all sorts of ideas on what spirituality is. The meaning of spirituality is:

  • The quality or state of being spiritual – Merriam Webster

  • About seeking a meaningful connection with something bigger than yourself, which can result in positive emotions, such as peace, awe, contentment, gratitude, and acceptance.

Just by looking at the word “Spirituality” there are several words within that word. First, you see Spirituality, and Spirituality, and Spirituality. Remember our definition of spirituality– the quality or state of being spiritual. So what is the condition of your spirit (mind)? What is the condition of your (life activities) health? What are the habits/actions (rituals) that are being performed spiritually?

Spirit-uality - Mind

Spiritual-ity - Life activities

Spi-ritual-ity - Habits

What part of the human being is spiritual? It is the mind. There is a close connection between the physical and the spiritual of the human body. In the book Mind, Character, and Personality book 1 page 59.3

“The relation which exists between the mind and the body is very intimate. When one is affected, the other sympathizes. The condition of the mind affects the health of the physical system. If the mind is free and happy, from a consciousness of right doing and a sense of satisfaction in causing happiness to others, it creates a cheerfulness that will react upon the whole system, causing a freer circulation of the blood and a toning up of the entire body.”

Your mind and body are very close and connected, which means as you think your body will follow. If you are sick spiritually, you will also be sick physically. As a spiritual person created by God you are ultimately looking for:

  • Purpose

  • Function– Why am I here?

  • Love– True Love

  • Liberty/Freedom

  • Peace

  • Security

  • Connections/Relationships

  • Truth

If someone would have lied to you, you normally would want to know the truth. Why? It is because the truth will set you free.

So as a spiritual person you are looking for truth. There are people out there that are literally trying to make you believe a lie. There are also people who don’t want to know the truth because they like living a lie. However, one day they will have to face the truth.

Your belief system determines who you are. So we must examine those beliefs, but how do we determine what beliefs are true versus false? How do you weigh them? Where is your knowledge base to find out what is truth and what is error? People often say I have my truth and you have yours. They don’t even realize what they are saying. They are saying “I am god” because I have my own truth. Most assuredly, Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” John 14:6. Jesus not only said I have the truth, He said that He is the truth.

When I first read the Bible one of the most profound and strongest evidence of truth is “prophecy.” This is how I determined that the Bible was true. For God to be able to predict the beginning to the end is amazing. So I thought if God could predict the future accurately without one mistake, what else does He have to say? So I studied the Bible and allowed the Bible to tell me who I am, what I believe, and why I believe it? And since God is the creator of all, He is the only one that can answer all my questions, and He did.

Only God can help you overcome your trauma. Only God can give you purpose and fulfillment. Only God can establish what is truth. He is the only one to help you live a guilt-free life. Let the Bible be your source of knowledge and when error comes you can use the Bible to discern what is truth and what is error.

In face of trauma you have a very present help in trouble.

The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 4:8-12, “We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. So then death worketh in us, but life in you.”

There is so much error out there and your spirituality is being affected without you knowing. You have to know who you are, what you believe, and why you believe it. Let the Bible be your foundation and ask Jesus to work in your life today.
