"You shall teach them diligently to your children..." (Deuteronomy 6:7).
The mind will never cease to be active. It is open to influences, good or bad... When reason is awakening, the mind is most susceptible, and so the very first lessons are of great importance. These lessons have a powerful influence in the formation of character. If they are of the right stamp, and if, as the child advances in years, they are followed up with patient perseverance, the earthly and the eternal destiny will be shaped for good (1MCP 293.3).
Being the first holds incredible significance. Our first crush, first child, first job, these experiences leave lasting imprints on our memory and shape who we become. They influence our beliefs, decisions, and even our future.
Consider a boy who grew up in a home where love was rarely spoken, and criticism was the norm. The first time he failed, he was met with harsh words instead of guidance. That moment shaped his belief that he would never be good enough. Years later, he may need serious help to see the truth and break free from that lie.
That's why, when we have the power to choose our firsts, we must choose wisely. But as children, we don't always have that choice. Our early lessons, especially moral and spiritual ones, must come from godly individuals with wisdom. If not, the enemy will seize the opportunity, planting falsehoods in young minds and sealing them in deception. The foundation of truth must be laid early, for what is first often lasts the longest.
